Take a walking tour to some of the county’s most ancient temples in the Historic District of Luang Prabang. These iconic temples provide a glimpse into Laos’ cultural heritage and ancient architectural styles.

  • Wat Xieng Thong, Khem Khong Street: sometimes called the “Golden City Temple,” Wat Xieng Thong dates to the 16th century and features a “tree of life” mosaic.
  • Wat Wisunarat (Wat Visoun): also known as Wat Visoun, this temple is Luang Prabang’s oldest, having been built in 1513. Visitors will find a collection of ancient Buddha statues inside and a stupa on top that looks like a watermelon.
  • Wat Long Khoun: across the Mekong from the Historic District island is this lesser-known temple, which should be admired for its unique murals and traditional wooden architecture. It’s also a peaceful getaway from the main tourist areas.
  • Wat Manorom: officially known as Wat Thatpathoumaram, Wat Manorom features a multi-tiered roof and traditional Laos architecture. Guests can view 14th-century structures throughout the complex and in the main hall.

Tuk tuk drivers and motorcycle taxis will take tourists to the falls for a minimal fee.

The caves are laden with Buddhist figures and feature wide tunnels covered with ancient art. Pak Ou Cave can be reached in about 15 minutes by tuk tuk or taxi. Boats also travel daily to the caves. The trip is about one and a half hours long.
  • Mekong River, North of Luang Prabang: take a cruise, kayaking tour or leisurely tubing adventure down Luang Prabang’s section of the iconic Mekong River.
